Young Scientists Showcase Creations at Annual Fair

Long Valley Junior Women's Club sponsors event for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade township students.

More than 60 Washington Township students took science to the limit recently, showing off their homemade creations at the annual Science Fair sponsored by the Long Valley Junior Women’s Club.

Students in grades four, five, and six all vied for cash prizes at the top-3 winners in each grade. A People’s Choice Award was also bestowed to students as voted on by all fair attendees.

The first, second, and third place winners in the sixth grade were:

1. Magnets and Water – Friends or Foes? (Colin Gallagher)
2. Where are the Germs Hiding? (Elijah Shepard)
3. Exercise Your Brain (Sydney Wall)

The first, second, and third place winners in the fifth grade were:
1. Left-sided vs. Right-sided, How Do You Measure Up? (Jackson Noto, Tommy O’Keefe, Matthew McIsaac)
2. How High Can a Gymnast Fly? (Isabel Greco)
3. Controlling Static Electricity (Jamie Doris, Sydney Babbit)

The first, second and third place winners in the fourth grade were:

1. The Science of Skyrocketing Soda (Bridget Adams, Avery Schwartz, Caitey Wozniak)
2. Supercooling Water and Instant Ice (J.J. Lawrence)
3. The Best Way to Spin a Dreidel (Zachary Byank)

People’s Choice Award:
The Punnett Square (Grace Soltas, Gabriella Cavallone)

The student scientists were joined by professionals from around the region as well, including:

  • Morris County Sheriff’s Office – a bomb robot and a canine officer with handler
  • Haas Laser Technologies – demonstration of what lasers do
  • Morris County 4-H – a sinking & floating demonstration
  • Feathered Friends (a 4-H Club) – baby chicks
  • Schiff Nature Preserve – “Bugs to Bunnies”… with Preston the rescue rabbit and a lightning bug craft
  • 1st Lego League Robotics Club – presented their Robot project
  • STEM-CAM – hands-on experiments including Balloon Kebob and Angry Bird Catapult
  • Girl Scout Troop 81724 – hands on experiments for kids
