Boy Swimmers Dominate, Girls Fall in Dual Meet

Dozen student-athletes set personal bests.

West Morris Central Swim team had mixed results in their meet against Hanover Park High School on Jan. 3. The boys team came away with a convincing win but the girls, unfortunately, did not fare quite as well.

In a prior meet against Villa Walsh, the girls had started to gain ground against their competition by capturing two of the three relay races, both high scoring events necessary to help win meets. Alas, that feat was not repeated against Hanover Park. On the other hand, there were many individual accomplishments deserving praise.

Freshman Kowalewski took a decisive first place in the 200 meter Free.  Freshman Castaneda continued to dominate both the 200 meter IM and the 400 meter Free events. In the process, Kowalewski and Castaneda also bested their individual times in the 200 meter Free and 400 meter Free, respectively.

Coming at third place in both the 50 meter and 100 meter Free events was Freshman Crowley.  Senior Ungemach finished third in the 100 meter Back.  Senior Shannon finished first in the 100 meter Breast. The team of Crowley (Fr), Lamperti (Sr), Kowalewski (Fr) and Castadena (Fr) won the 200 meter Free Relay by a convincing margin of almost 8 seconds.  The final scores were Hanover Park, 111 to Central 59.

Coming off the meet against Delbarton where Central was almost shut out had it failed to secure a first place in the 50 meter Free, the boys team was having a déjà vu moment when it found itself behind Hanover Park in the 200 meter Medley Relay, the first race.

But the team of Antonucci (Jr), Donnelly (Jr), Holm (Sr) and A. Vinh (Jr) gradually clawed their way back into the race to clinch the first place finish.  That win essentially set up the tempo for the rest of the evening.  Junior Schommer, despite earning best time in the 200 meter Free, finished second.  He also took second place in the 400 meter Free.

Junior Beyerl took third in the 200 meter Free. For the 200 meters IM, Freshman Ambrose came from behind in the last 25 meters for an exciting first place win. He also took third in the 400 meter Free. Junior Dlouhy received his best time while placing third in the 200 meter IM. Central simply dominated the 50 meter Free event by taking the top three spots starting with Junior A. Vinh, Junior Antonucci and Senior Tamburrino. Antonucci also took first in the 100 meter Back. He, too, bested his times in these two events. Tamburrino also finished third in the 100 meter Breast. Seniors Holm and Farnsworth took first and third place finish, respectively in the 100 meter Fly.

Central also owned the 100 meter Free with A. Vinh, Holm and Waters (Sr) being the top three finishers.  Waters also earned his best time in this event.  Junior Donnelly came in second in the 100 meter Breast.  For the icing on the cake, Central decisively swept all three relay races to garner their first victory.  The final scores were Hanover Park 49 to Central 113.
