Central Swimmers Record Personal-Best Times

Wolfpack fall to Morris Knolls in second meet of season.

West Morris Central Swim team had its second meet against Morris Knolls High School at County College of Morris on Thursday. Both the girls and boys teams suffered their second loss of the season. However, there were outstanding performances by members of both teams. These, in turn, were reflected in Central achieving higher final scores.

The freshman girls continued to show their prowess this early in the season.  Freshman Castaneda dominated both the 200 yard IM and the 500 yard Free events.  Placing second in the 200 yard Free and third in the 500 yard Free was Freshman Kowalewski.  And Freshman Crowley took third in the 50 yard Free and second in the 100 yard Free.  Sophomore McKenna finished second in the 100 yard Fly.  Junior Sabrina Belen took third place in the 100 yard Breast.  Senior Ungemach came in second in the 100 yard Back.  Senior and Team Captain Shannon finished first in the 100 yard Breast and third in the 200 yard IM.  The final scores were Morris Knolls, 102 to Central, 68.

The winner of the boys meet was once again decided by the last race, the 400 yard Free Relay.  But first, let’s review some highlights.  Freshman Ambrose is quietly staking his claim in the 200 yard IM by, once again, taking first place in this event.  He also finished third in the 500 yard Free.  Junior Schommer lost out in the 200 yard Free race, finishing second but dominated the opponent in the 500 yard Free, winning by more than 7 seconds.  Junior A. Vinh cruised into first place in both the 50 yard and 100 yard Free events.  Junior Antonucci finished third in the 100 yard Back.  Junior Donnelly had a strong first place finish in the 100 yard Breast.  Senior Holme easily took second place in both the 50 yard Free and 100 yard Fly.  But the real suspense of the night was on the 200 yard Free Relay with the team of Holme, Schommer, Antonucci and A. Vinh out-touching Morris Knolls’ by 0.04 second.  That was one razor-sharp margin of victory!  The team of Schommer, Ambrose, Donnelly and Tamburrino won in convincing fashion in the last event, 400 yard Free Relay.  With that, Central could have secured at least a tie if it also took third place in the contest.  The final scores were Morris Knolls 87 to Central 83.
