The Washington Township Historical Society will be hosting its 28th Annual Historic House Tour on Sat. Dec. 10, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year’s tour will be held primarily in the Pleasant Grove section on Schooley’s Mountain.

Two of the oldest homes in that area that have never been on the tour will be opened this year.

The Smith Farmstead on Califon Road was built c. 1800 and has had two additions added on to make it a charming farmhouse on what was once the Stewart Hann property.

The Colver House on Wehrli Road was home to several of the Colvers, members of the Colverites – a religious group that traveled to Schooley’s Mountain in search of religious freedom.

Two other homes on Pleasant grove, the Fritts House and the Hunt House plus the newly renovated Highlands Presbyterian Church on Heath Lane will complete the tour on the mountain.

Lunch will be served at the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church on Califon Road where Kay Weeks will be demonstrating rug hooking.  She will also have rugs for sale and the proceeds will be used for the church’s mission trip to Joplin, MO.

The Obadiah LaTourette Grist Mill on E. Mill Road will be open for touring in loving memory and to honor Keith Hayes, the Washington Township Land Trust’s late president.

Tickets for the tour will be on sale at the Washington Township Historical Museum, 6 Fairview Ave., on the following dates:

Sunday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec. 10, the day of the tour, beginning at 10 a.m.

If tickets are purchased in advance, a tour map will be provided at that time.  Tour house booklets will be available at all of the homes the day of the tour.

Tickets are $20 per person.

Note: The tour is not appropriate for children under 12 and the homes are not handicapped accessible.

This is a self-guided and self-paced tour.
