Girls' Soccer Takes Out Mendham on the Road

Wolfpack gives sister-school only its second loss of the season.

In a battle between sister schools Mendham and West Morris Central, the Wolfpack handed Mendham their second loss of the season with a thrilling 3-2 win on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Things looked bright for the Wolfpack early on when Kelly Kavanaugh gathered in a rebound of her own blocked shot and slipped it over the keeper's head for a 1-0 lead.

In a well-played game with both teams pressing the action, Mendham knotted things up at the 13-minute mark. It looked like the first half would end tied at one, but with 30 seconds to go, Mendham took a 2-1 lead. West Morris came out charged up to play in the second half and immediately pressed the action. Five minutes into the half, Megan Monaco crossed a ball from the left wing trying to hit Emily Thomas. The ball caromed off the defender guarding Thomas into the net and the Wolfpack tied the game up at two.

With 16 minutes left in the game, Ana Doyle was taken down just outside the box. Kristy Cotter played the ensuing direct kick into the box and after a mad scramble for the ball, Christina Hein drove it home and the Wolfpack led 3-2.

For the balance of the game, West Morris leaned on its defense, led by Ally Ketzler, Amy McQuaide, Amanda Pakutka and Julie Shields to keep Mendham out of the net. The West Morris girls will be in action again on Sunday, taking on Villa Walsh in the quarter finals of the Morris County tournament. The game is tentatively scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Villa Walsh's home field.
