Ride of Silence Comes to Long Valley May 16

World-wide event begins locally at Cycle Craft.

Cyclists around the world will ride a local road course on Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. to remember those who have been killed while sharing the road with motorists. 

The 10th annual event has riders wear black arm bands while riding silently through a 5-mile course. The event is focused on raising awareness during bike safety month to motorists, police, traffic engineers, insurance companies, and city officials, according to a press release from Michael Savino, chairman for the David D. Hammar Foundation.

The David D. Hammar Foundation is a New Jersey non-profit corporation formed in 2006 to promote the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians through promotion of DDH foundation-run safety awareness programs and helmet donation.

Locally, the 5-mile course will begin at , located at 8 West Mill Road. Cyclists are not required to register, and are asked to show up at 6:30 p.m. to hear the .

Cyclists are asked to stay together during the ride, and move at a pace of 10 to 12 miles per hour.

The ride requests black arm bands be worn to remember someone that has passed away from an accident, and a red arm band only if you have had a bike/motor vehicle accident. Helmets are required; bright clothing and lights are highly recommended for the ride. There are no fees charged for anyone to participate, but donations to help cover cost of insurance for riders and arm bands are accepted.
