Slippery Slope: Long Valley Skier Qualifies for Regional Competition

Carly DeLong's winter of winning continues with strong runs in Pennsylvania tournament.

While most people are wishing to forget this winter sooner rather than later, Long Valley’s Carly DeLong has made it one that will stick with her forever.

That’s because the sixth-grader is joining an elite group of skiers by advancing to the Francis Piche Invitational at Gunstock Mountain in New Hampshire this weekend, after a season of impressive runs and qualifying races.

DeLong, the oldest of three competitive skiers, took part in the U12 Pennsylvania State Championship at Ski Roundtop recently in the giant slalom and slalom races. In three slalom races, DeLong came in 11th overall, and did one better in the giant slalom, coming in 10th overall. She ran three heats for each event.

Those finishes were good enough to qualify for the Francis Piche Invitational, which includes racers from Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and Virginia.

The event is Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16 in New Hampshire. As a participant, DeLong will also have the opportunity to train with other athletes from across the region in Gunstock Ski Club’s clinics.
