Employees Walk to Aid Shop Owner With Cancer

Owner of Rafferty's Salon in second battle with breast cancer.

Kathy Herzog has created an environment of fun and flair for her employees for nearly 25 years.

And now, her friends, colleagues and customers want to repay her in a time of need.

Herzog, the owner of Rafferty’s Salon in Califon, is currently in her second battle with breast cancer. The staff of the salon has organized a 5K walk fundraiser set for Aug. 11 at 9 a.m., which will begin at River Road in Califon, then connect to the Columbia Trail.

Wendy Gutkin, one of 12 employees at the salon, said Herzog deserves all the outpouring of support she’s received.

“Kathy just has the most positive outlook on everything,” Gutkin said. “She’s been a huge advocate for the Look Good, Feel Good program. She seems to be involved in everything.”

Herzog’s salon will celebrate its 25th year in business this October, and has a loyal fan base from Long Valley and surrounding areas, Gutkin said.

Registration for the event is $30, and all proceeds will benefit Herzog and her daughter, Gutkin said.

“Kathy wants this to be a party,” Gutkin said. “That’s how she is; she wants to make sure everything is fun and upbeat for everyone around her.”

The event will also offer a silent auction and other ways to donate, according to the website.
