Historical Society Names Longtime Twp. Resident Honorary Member

Millicent Palmer and Marty Fleisher have been around the block a time or two.

Fortunately for locals, that block happens to be right here in Washington Township.

At the March 18 general membership meeting of the Washington Township Historical Society, Palmer was celebrated as an honorary member for all her dedication to the society over the years, according to a press release from the organization.

Palmer and her late husband, Langdon, “were firm believers in preserving the rich history of our town,” the release said. “Among many things, they have donated a registry from the Belmont Hall Resort which includes Ulysses S. Grant’s signature and have hosted socials at the family’s lovely 1800s home which they restored it its original beauty.”

At the same meeting, Commander of Post 1776, the American Veterans Association of Washington Township (AVAWT), Martin “Marty” Fleisher spoke about his experiences as a World War II bomber pilot.

Fleisher flew 65 missions during the war in a B-26 between 1944 and 1945, as he’s told so many students in the area over the years. In addition, Fleisher has received 12 Air Medals, the release said.

The Washington Township Historical Society is dedicated to preserving local artifacts, genealogy and history, and has been around for more than five decades. The WTHS museum and library is open Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month September through June. Anyone interested in joining is welcomed.
