Fallen Heroes Road Name Honors OK'd by Twp.

Three property entryways will be named in honor of Long Valley residents killed in military action.

Two private lanes and one township road will be given additional names this spring to honor Long Valley residents killed in military action after the Washington Township Committee voted unanimously to approve the ordinance. The American Veterans Association of Washington Township (AVAWT) came to the governing body in November, requesting the group consider taking this step to honor three local heroes. “We originally wanted to have some ball fields named after our heroes,” AVAWT Adjutant Forrest Burgener said to the committee in November. “But one of our members came up with this idea to name streets in their honor instead, for our heroes.” The two private lanes include the entryway and exit loop at Zion Lutheran Church, which will be named…

Fallen Heroes Honored With Street Names

Local veterans group seeks ways to remember those killed in action.

Members of the American Veterans Association of Washington Township, post 1776, are always looking for–and taking part in–ways to keep history alive in the area. The group has embarked on a new project with the hopes that three former Long Valley residents will forever be remembered as heroes hailing from this community. Members Forrest Burgener, Larry Oppel, Marty Fleischer, and Tomas McBride presented an idea to the Washington Township Committee at its regular meeting Monday night, seeking approval from the five-member governing body. “We originally wanted to have some ball fields named after our heroes,” Burgener said to the committee. “But one of our members came up with this idea to name streets in their honor instead, for our heroes…

Gentlemen/ladies....thank you so much for the publicity regarding the Veterans Month of November at our local Long Valley schools. :) I would be remiss, however, and may not get an "audience" for my presentation on "John Andre, Revolutionary War Spy" if I don't correct the date of his "demise"....it was Oct. 2, 1780....NOT 1970!! Girl Scout Earns Gold By Serving Veterans

Long Valley teen cooks for entire organization.

How does one garner gold? By helping those who have served the red, white and blue. For Long Valley's MacKenzie Villano, coming up with a service project to achieve her Girl Scout Gold Award was a no-brainer. The granddaughter of two veterans said she felt her action–cooking a dinner for the entire American Veterans Association of Washington Township (AVAWT) at the Senior Center on Saturday, Feb. 19–was the least she could do to honor the brave men and women who have served her country. Villano was told that communication had strained within the group, when one member tried reaching out to another, only to find out he had passed away. "This just wasn't acceptable to me and I felt the need to help these veterans out as much as possible …

Kudos to all the Students, Parents and School Personnel who participated in this Wounded Warriors event. Our military personnel returning from combat need all different kinds of support and being remembered by young school children is one meaningful type of support. Thank goodness the young children are not mimicking the shameful treatment our Viet Nam veterans got when they returned home. To the…   more ›

Students Salute Flag, Honor Veterans [Photos]

Nearly a dozen veterans were on hand for annual flag-raising ceremony at elementary school.

Students at Old Farmers Road School, in conjunction with members of the American Veterans Association of Washington Township (AVAWT), celebrated America’s veterans with a flag-raising ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 8. As part of its mission, the AVAWT believes that anyone who has been part of the military–not just served overseas–is a veteran, and accepts personnel and their families from all the armed forces. While Veteran’s Day is Friday, Nov. 11, the ceremony was scheduled for Tuesday because of teacher development days and no school on Thursday and Friday this week. Three of the school’s fifth graders assisted veterans Raymond Milhime, Marty Fleischer, and Jim Smith in raising the flag to begin the ceremony, which was followed by the pledge…
