Food Drive Starts for Budd Lake Teens' Families

Local pastor and old classmate come together to help Schimanski and Cianciotto families.

The effort to help families of teens who fell through the icy waters of Budd Lake earlier this month will continue in the form of food donations, thanks to some old high school friends. Pastor Matt Jones of Mountaintop Church in Hackettstown, along with former classmate Toni Perry, are constructing a drive through Feb. 16 that will donate food to the families of Clyde Schimanski III and Nick Cianciotto III, according to nj.com. Schimanski and Cianciotti perished on Monday, Jan. 7 after falling through a layer of ice on Budd Lake while ice fishing. Both boys were 15 and students at Mt. Olive High School. Jones and Perry have worked out a plan to provide food through Grace Church's God's Kitchen in Netcong, the report said. Dining gift …

Budd Lake Teens Memorialized With Sign

Township says more formal action will be taken in the spring.

Just a couple weeks after two Mt. Olive Township teens went missing in the icy waters of Budd Lake, a sign has been erected near the water’s edge in remembrance of the youngsters. “In Loving Memory to Nick and Clyde” the sign reads in a photo Mayor Rob Greenbaum posted to his public Facebook page. The teens, Clyde Schimanski III and Nick Cianciotto III, both 15, went missing just after 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 after ice fishing on the ice. Their bodies were recovered over the next two days. “So that we shall never forget,” Greenbaum wrote along with posting the photo on the social media site. The mayor also made mention of doing “something more formal in the spring,” in the post Tuesday afternoon. Greenbaum did not respond to questions from …

We Lakers never forget, and never fail to take care of our own... We have lost FAR too many kids over the past 12 months, yet we manage to remain positive about life and always seem to rally for each other. Here's to hoping the NEXT 12 months pass without having to bury any more of our children.   more ›

I guess I just want to say that biologically, children of this age actually are not developed completely in the area of the brain that dictates impulse control. The adults commenting, however, are developed in that area, so I ask that to utilize that impulse control. Also, the very fact that they were called by the beauty of the lake in the first place, shows the depth at which these young boys …   more ›

Loss of Budd Lake Teens Spurs Community Aid

Grief counseling in Mount Olive High School and a pair of fundraisers for funeral costs are in the works for the families of Clyde Schimanski and Nick Cianciotto.

Budd Lake resident Kim Maleyonok didn't know how bad the situation was on Monday night, but didn't sit idly by once she heard there were two teenagers missing in the partially frozen waters of Budd Lake. "My husband was the one who brought it to my attention. He was like, 'there is a helicopter out there searching,'" Maleyonok said. By Tuesday morning, Maleyonok and Katherine Sutton were by the shore of Budd Lake and at the side of Clyde Schimanski Jr. whose son Clyde Schimanski III was one of the teens being searched for. "I've known Big Clyde for a long time," Sutton said. "Even after I moved to Newton I still would come and visit him all the time." Sutton and Maleyonok were there in pajama pants, unwilling to stray far from "Big Clyde" …

Search Resumes for Second Teen in Budd Lake

Body of one teenage boy who went missing in icy water was found Tuesday afternoon, search for the second was suspended Tuesday night, prosecutor says.

Update, 10 a.m. Wednesday: Dive and recovery teams have resumed searching for the body of the second teen in Budd Lake as of 8 a.m. First Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Zelante said the Morris County Prosecutor's Office will release a statement later in the day. Mt. Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum wrote on his public Facebook page Wednesday morning, "Let's bring the last boy home today." The search for the second teen, missing since Monday night in the partially frozen waters of Budd Lake, was suspended Tuesday afternoon, Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp said. Knapp said the New Jersey State Police Marine Service Bureau's six divers spent more than six hours searching in the icy waters on Tuesday. "The divers who used sonar to assist …

FYI LVresident....the fire house I was talking about, houses fire trucks and my point being that its a shame fire men...not EMT's, were not at that FIRE house that night who were paid, not volunteers, who have the equipment to responded instantly, instead of it being paged out, crew members driving in their own personal vehicles with blue lights to get to the building, fire up the trucks and then…   more ›

Teens Missing in Icy Waters of Budd Lake, Prosecutor Says

Area residents said they heard screams for help, but search of lake unsuccessful Monday night.

Two teens remained missing Monday night after multiple agencies searched the icy waters of Budd Lake for hours, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said. The search was expected to continue as conditions allowed through the night, Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp said. "There were multiple calls yelling for help," from the lake, Knapp said. "Two local residents attempted to make a rescue in their own boat but were unable." Mt. Olive Police Cpl. Eric Anthony confirmed the search had yet to yield any results as of about 9 p.m., contradicting an earlier report that one person had been rescued. "Nobody was removed from the lake," Anthony said. "Incorrect info originally reported." An earlier report from NJ.com said an individual…

Now both communities are showing an outpouring of love and support for Chris Connors since his death in a car accident on route 46 last week. On Friday, Oct. 19 a baked goods sale is being held at Belvidere High School as part of the homecoming festivites. "Proceeds of the bake sale will be benefitting the Connors family," Melissa Altadonna Kramer, Chris Connors sister-in-law, said. Mt. Olive Native Remembered as Family Man and Hero

Services for Chris Connors, the Belvidere man killed in a car accident on Thursday, to be at the Cochran Funeral home Monday.

Chris Connors was the "tough guy." The guy with the jean jacket with the Iron Maiden and Metallica patches sewn on. Hanging out with his best friend Brian Hager, Connors exuded the self confidence of a guy who didn't care what anybody thought. But beneath that tough exterior was the proverbial heart of gold. And on Thursday, a car accident in the town he was raised in claimed his life. "I've known him since the fourth grade," sister-in-law Melissa Altadonna Kramer said. "He was a tough, wild, free-spirited guy with a true genuine heart who would never intentionally hurt anyone." When Connors married Kramer's sister, Michelle, she told him he had to be nice to her to make up for all the teasing at Sandshore School, middle school and high …
