$4,000 grant awarded to police for additional enforcement over 12-day period.

For 14 days in May and June, Washington Township police are going to enforce that law by cracking down extra hard. The department has been granted $4,000 to cover an additional 80 patrol hours from May 20 to June 2 during the annual Click it or Ticket campaign, according to Lt. Doug Compton. Click It or Ticket campaign resulted in 11 arrest in Washington Township.
Washington Township police, participating in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign from May 21 through June 1, issued 115 seatbelt violation tickets, according to Lt. Doug Compton. During the 80 hours of additional law enforcement, funded by a state grant from the New Jersey Highway Traffic Safety in the amount of $4,000, officers made a total of 11 arrests, Compton said. The arrests were for a driving while intoxicated, four for controlled dangerous substance, one for contempt of court, one for criminal mischief, and two for hindering apprehension. It's that time of year — when the weather gets nice, the trees turn green, and, if you're not careful, you get a ticket for not wearing your seetbelt. The annual “Click it or Ticket” campaign is back, which means police departments throughout the country will be stepping up enforcement of seat belt laws. It's a good idea to buckle up any time of the year, but if you don't have the cash to hand over to the municipal court, you might want to be a little extra careful in May and June. Washington Twp. police arrest 25 during two-week time frame.
The Washington Township Police Department issued 323 summonses between Monday, May 23 and midnight on Sunday, June 5, during the Click It or Ticket campaign, according to Washington Township Police Sgt. Doug Compton. Compton, who serves as the department’s Click It or Ticket project director, received word at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 20 that the department would be allotted the $4,000 federal grant to pay officers overtime funds to add personnel to the patrol units. Of the 323 summonses issued, 199 were for failure to wear a seatbelt, which was 16 more than in 2010, Compton said.
