One of the biggest events of the year in Washington Township, the annual Memorial Day ceremony has been set for 2013, this time honoring fallen heroes in perpetuity. On Saturday, May 25 at Rock Spring Park at the War Memorial Site, residents, officials and veterans alike will remember those who went to war and paid the ultimate price while fighting for the United States of America. The event will kick off at noon, saluting servicemen and servicewomen, with keynote spearker James Smith, Sr. Smith, a former Long Valley resident and member of the armed forces, lost his son, Army Cpl. Local veterans group seeks ways to remember those killed in action.
Members of the American Veterans Association of Washington Township, post 1776, are always looking for–and taking part in–ways to keep history alive in the area. The group has embarked on a new project with the hopes that three former Long Valley residents will forever be remembered as heroes hailing from this community. After a canceled work session meeting and possibly the largest natural disaster to ever hit Washington Township, the town’s governing body will meet for its regular meeting Monday night at the municipal building. According to Committeeman Tracy Tobin in a blog posted on Long Valley Patch, he fully expects the committee to take “citizen input on the storm” at the meeting. Sandy–the storm mentioned by Tobin–knocked out power in town for residents anywhere between two days and two full weeks.
