Shotgun Incident Elicits Resident Concerns

Local police no longer control information given to inquiring callers.

It seems as though one hand didn’t know what the other was doing when authorities diffused a potentially dangerous situation last week, which led to resident inquiries and confusion between local police and the county. Three Washington Township Police officers headed into a cornfield near Turtleback Road and successfully negotiated with a suicidal man armed with a shotgun, as reported Friday, Aug. 17. The incident required assistance from the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, which used a helicopter to hover around the area and locate the man, in his vehicle, settled in the cornfield. State, Local Police Search for Missing Person

Helicopter assisted in canvassing field near Turtleback Road for 40 minutes Thursday night.

Authorities were searching for a missing person in an open field on Turtleback Road between Beacon Hill and West Valley Brook roads in the Califon section of the township Thursday night. A helicopter was assisting with the search from about 9:30 to 10:20 p.m. Authorities from the New Jersey State Police Aviation Department said the helicopter left the scene, but was requested to be put on standby by the Washington Township Police, and the investigation is ongoing. Police could not immediately release further details, and as of 10:40 p.m. the dispatch center could not confirm the incident had come to an end. The individual was found and gave up his weapon to the Washington Township Police officers participating in the search. No one was injured in the incident. The WTPD will issue a press release to the media.   more ›
