Regional Board OKs Nov. Election Move (Video)

Chester, Mendham Twp. representatives oppose change.

The West Morris Regional School District board of education voted on Monday to change its election from April to November. The move to join the general election is now locked in place for the next four years. Switching dates from April to November was designed to prompt higher voter turnout, but it also allows the school board to automatically adopt a proposed budget as long as it stays under the state-mandated tax cap without the public voting on it. Board Members Torn on November Election Move

Move would save costs, but eliminate budget vote.

Members of the Washington Township Board of Education had mixed feelings about possibly moving school elections from April to November, after Governor Chris Christie signed legislation giving districts the opportunity to do so. Political influence and a possible lack of focus on education were some of the reasons the board members did not want to make the move, while saving costs on an additional election and seeing a higher turnout were the ideas behind making the switch. “The [school] election was put purposely in April to be separate from politics,” board member Kevin Daly said. “It’s separated for a purpose, and before we make a decision, we need to visit that purpose.” Board member Kathleen Koop echoed those sentiments, pointing her …
