Inspirational Musical, Forward Focus in 'The Paw'

West Morris Central's student newspaper takes a look at fashion and technology as well.

In its latest edition, West Morris Central's student newspaper, "The Paw," topples topics from prom season to impending murder trial surrounding Olympic runner Oscar Pistorious. Student journalists lead the publication with a review of what has been billed one of the most inspiring spring musicals in recent memory, Children of Eden, which took the stage in March. Athletic accolades are also doled out by the paper's staff, as well as a look into the school's next move into technology in the classroom.

NBA Player to Share Drug Struggle With Community

Chris Herren will speak to parents and students about hazards of drug and alcohol abuse at West Morris Central High School.

Teens are facing a seemingly non-stop overload of access to drugs, both narcotic and prescription, regardless of their location. Drugs such as cocaine and heroin are no longer being found in inner cities; they’ve made their way–and with a strong presence–to the rural areas where teens with curious minds and idle hands are looking to try something new. And that’s the reason why the Washington Township Municipal Alliance Committee and West Morris Central High School have partnered to bring students, and the community as a whole, a presentation that will hopefully help someone in need. Chris Herren played professional basketball in the NBA for two seasons before heading overseas to play for two more years. He was the 33rd overall draft choice…

Mendham Drops, Central Not Ranked Among Top High Schools

U.S. News & World Report releases 2013 national standings.

West Morris Central remained outside the top-50 high schools in New Jersey, and Mendham High School dropped from number 33 to number 40 in this year’s U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings, released Tuesday. The magazine’s annual report ranks all high schools in the country and marks the top 50 in each state. New Jersey had many changes, including the top spot, which went to Biotechnology High School in Freehold, ousting this year’s number two, High Technology High School. Three main factors are calculated for the rankings, including college readiness, math proficiency and language proficiency. U.S. News & World Report ranked West Morris Central and Mendham High School as indicated in the chart: 35.5 (39% AP Tested) Mendham High …

that report makes it hard to really compare things as we are an IB district not an AP district and that appears to only have AP data on it... i did notice Ridge/Chatham both amazing districts with National Merit and high SAT scores and TONS of APs are not IB ... i have throw it out there again are we really helping our kids with IB? The top districts appear to be AP (I've said before I prefer AP …   more ›

Central Grad to Launch College's LAX Program

Kim Williams hired as first head coach for Richard Stockton's women's lacrosse team, set to join NCAA in 2014.

Kim Williams has lacrosse running through her veins. So much so that she’s been entrusted with coaching–and launching–Richard Stockton College’s first-ever women’s lacrosse program, set to take the field in the spring of 2014, according to the Galloway Township, New Jersey school. Williams, a West Morris Central graduate, has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach for Colby College’s team, which is currently ranked sixth in the nation. Under her tutelage, six players have received All-American honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association, the Richard Stockton College athletic department said. The accolades aren’t just for her players, however. Williams, who spent her collegiate career at C.W. Post in …

Central Now Accepting Mendham High Students

Regional school board approves option for Mendham, Chester students to attend West Morris Central due to high enrollment.

With the attendance at Mendham and Central High schools unbalanced, a resolution was adopted to ameliorate the situation. The problem can be rectified if students residing in the Chesters and Mendhams have the option to enroll at Central. It will be on a voluntary, first-come, first-served basis with a maximum of 100 students. The West Morris Regional Board of Education unanimously approved the measure, which was formally introduced by Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast earlier this month. "Saying the Mendham and Chester residents can come (to Central) really is to mainly alleviate potential population problems that we have over at Mendham over the next couple of years," Pendergrast said. The resolution states that transportation will be …

Gee Matt and you wonder why the central kids hate the mendham kids so much... wow nice to know we are that sucky! I wish we would dump mendham and just be our own school district. then dump the IB go all AP (and I mean offer a TON of AP options) and have the freedom for kids to take a variety of classes yet dig deeper into the areas of their interests. Nothings better then seeing as STEM kids do …   more ›

Central Swimmers End Season With a Splash

Personal bests and notches in the win column highlight the 2012-13 season finale.

Wouldn’t it be gratifying for the swim team to close out the season with a win?  The West Morris Central girls team did just that against Madison High School. While the margin of victory was not quite as large, it was convincing enough to show that the team had grown more mature and experienced than at the start of the season. First, for team performance and lots of points, the girls won the 200-meter Medley relay and 200-meter Free relay races. Secondly, the girls pretty much swept all the individual races. Freshman Kowalewski who just came off the disability list quickly re-established herself by taking first place in the 200 meters and 100 meters Free. Senior Hofmann finished third in the 200 meters Free. Freshman Castaneda cruised to …

'Children's' Perspective: 'Eden' Has it All

Cast members of West Morris Central's 'Children of Eden' spring musical explain what makes the show great, and why it's a must-see, for the spiritual and not-so-religious.

West Morris Central senior and Long Valley Patch blogger Kevin Branco is one of the cast members taking part in this year's spring musical, Children of Eden. Patch spoke with the production's director, Jeff Hogan, and here Branco has provided a question and answer-style article with other cast members. Without further ado: As a member of the cast of Children of Eden, I have heard many misconceptions and questions about the content, quality, and overall awesomeness of the production. I took it upon myself to interview a diverse contingent of the cast to find out more about who they are and why they promote the show in such an enthusiastic way. The show will be performed this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., as well as on …

2% Budget Increase OK'd by Regional School Board

Seven members split 5-2 on spending plan's approval.

The budget for the West Morris Regional High School district in 2013-14 has been sent to the county for approval, and tentatively reached its cap of a 2-percent increase over the current year's spending plan. The tentative budget's approval, however, wasn’t a unanimous decision by the board, as Chester Township representative Marcia Asdal and Mendham Township representative James Button disapproved of the more than $50 million expenditure. Asdal and Button charged that the budget wasn’t appropriate because of its disparity in spending at each school — a roughly $1.3 million difference, tilted toward Central — and said they could not support a spending plan until per pupil costs were equal at each building. That $1.3 million disparity, …
