Michael St. Jacques beats out nearly 20 residents to fill seat.
It took nearly a full day after the polls closed, but the Washington Township Board of Education secured its final member after nearly 20 write-in candidates were put on ballots during Tuesday's General Election. Michael St. Jacques received 127 write-in votes, according to Washington Township Administrator Debbie Burd. That total beat out more than a dozen others, she said. Coming in behind St. Jacques with 46 votes was Tom Lotito, Burd said. The rest of the field received less than 10 write-in votes each. St. Jacques has coached his daughter's soccer team and assisted with his son's baseball team, he said. He has three children in the school district. The newest member of the K-8 Board of Education will be sworn in at its January …

Voters in New Jersey on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 14 electoral votes.
Barack Obama won New Jersey’s 14 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in New Jersey. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.

Update: This article was updated at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7 with quotes from Gov. Chris Christie. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. "The task of perfecting our union moves forward. It moves forward because of you," Obama told supporters in his acceptance speech shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. "It moves forward because you reaffirmed the spirit that has triumphed over war and depression. The spirit that has lifted …
Immediate need doesn't surpass next four years, residents believe.
Despite more than half of Washington Township remaining powerless as residents headed to the polls Tuesday, some said electricity–or lack thereof–had nothing to do with making it out to vote. Voting districts 3, 4, and 5 were displaced Tuesday and forced to fill out ballots at the Long Valley First Aid Squad. District 3 usually votes at West Morris Central High School, while 4 and 5 head to the Washington Township Municipal Building to fill out ballots. Even though the municipal building received power over the weekend, voting machines were designated to specific facilities prior to the restoration. From Fairmount Firehouse–also serving as a warming center for residents–to the First Aid Squad, the buzz was about the lack of electricity in …

Residents come out to 'make a difference.'
A lack of electricity at home didn’t stop residents from hitting the polls to have their voices heard in what some are calling the most important election in recent memory. “I’m voting to make a difference in my community and at the federal level,” said Washington Township resident Matt Jagusak after punching his ballot at Heath Village Tuesday morning. “This election in particular has been the most applicable to myself and my family and it’s the most important one I’ve voted in. I haven’t seen anything like this before.” Some locations were being hit by voters in spurts, while others had a consistent flow of residents throughout the morning. Either way, the attitude was upbeat, poll workers said. “There was a line outside when we opened (…
