Readers name Glenn Lightner Person of the Year for 2012.
He was quiet, kind, loved video games and shooting hoops with his friends. In 2012, Glenn Lightner’s courageous battle against brain cancer gripped a community, one that supported the teen and his family on a journey that would allow him to seek alternative medicine and therapies abroad. The 14-year-old, sadly, succumbed to the disease on Dec. 12 after five years of fighting. Last week, Long Valley Patch’s readers voted Glenn Lightner as their person of the year in 2012. Lightner’s father, Larry, said the community, however, needs to look at itself and understand how instrumental it was in the teen's fight. The Long Valley community was dealt a tragic loss this week, as we said goodbye to Glenn Lightner, a 14-year-old who lost his battle with brain cancer. Community may pay respects Saturday at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church.
The Lightner family has announced details for community members to pay respects to their son, Glenn Lightner, who passed away this week. A public viewing is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church on Spring Lane. A public mass is also scheduled at Our Lady of the Mountain Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Interment, which will follow, is private. All flowers and arrangements may be sent to St. Mark's Church in advance of Saturday's viewing.

Glenn Lightner, 14, died Wednesday after battling disease for five years.
After a five-year battle with brain cancer, Glenn Lightner died Wednesday morning in hospice care at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, according to a friend of the Lightner family. Lightner was 14-years-old. He loved playing basketball with his friends and was a Memphis Grizzlies fan. He was set to finish the eighth grade in June 2013. The Long Valley teen was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma grade III brain cancer in December 2007. He underwent numerous treatments, from chemotherapy to radiation therapies and multiple brain surgeries throughout the years-long battle. Long Valley's Larry Borst will take on 24-hour physical challenge, raise funds for Glenn Lightner.
Editor's Note: This article originally ran Oct. 17. Laurence Borst will be competing in the Tough Mudder competition Nov. 17 and is still fundraising for Glenn Lightner. He lifts things up and puts them down. Well, it’s more than that. He actually lifts himself over obstacles, through mud and between dangling electroshock wires while running miles on end. Essentially, Larry Borst is one tough mudder. He’s so tough that he’s taking on an invitation-only, 24-hour physical challenge, the World’s Toughest Mudder, scheduled for Nov. 17 and 18 at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. Local PBA hosted 5K to benefit Glenn Lightner Saturday at the Long Valley Middle School.
The latest in fundraising efforts to support Glenn Lightner, a 13-year-old Long Valley teen pursuing alternative medicine to cure the brain cancer he's been battling since 2007, has brought in $9,700. The Run Like Lighting 5K fun run event, hosted by the Washington Township Police Benevolence Association Local #301, took off from the Long Valley Middle School Saturday morning. Participants ranged from friends to officers and school officials, all coming together for a common cause: helping Glenn Lightner's family find a cure. Were you at the event? Run Like Lightning takes off rain or shine Saturday morning at Middle School.
Amidst the flurry of fundraising activity in Long Valley this year to support a local teen battling cancer, the Washington Township Police Benevolence Association Local #301 is putting its efforts toward the cause as well. On Saturday, Oct. 6, the PBA will host a charitable 5K fun run and walk at the Long Valley Middle School titled "Run Like Lighting," with all proceeds benefitting 13-year-old Glenn Lightner, afflicted by brain cancer since 2007. The event will be held behind the Long Valley Middle School at 53 East Mill Road, and is open to everyone. Glenn Lightner's next overseas therapy treatment pushed back.
Glenn Lightner has been dealing with setbacks in his battle with brain cancer since 2007. The most recent one, however, has slowed his battle and forced his family to alter treatment plans. Just a few weeks after an MRI showed the 13-year-old boy’s brain was tumor free for the first time in three years, six new spots on his brain appeared, all in new locations. The teen headed back to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he had all six tumors gamanized by Dr. Shabbar Danish, who had previously performed laser surgeries on Glenn Lightner’s brain. The non-invasive procedure went as planned, but for the first time, Lightner was heavily affected by it, according to his father, Larry Lightner. When the family returned home that night, …

The Festival of Hope, an outdoor concert with food and fun for attendees took over Ort Farm last Sunday, and Patch was there to chronicle the picture-perfect day. On July 28, the Pampenin family of Long Valley lost their dog, Bandit, who ran away just minutes after bringing him home for the first time.
