For the Washington Township School District, three incumbents all filed, with no one challenging them. At its annual Memorial Day Ceremony, the American Veterans Association of Washington Township honored James “Jamie” Smith, a Long Valley native, by naming a road for him at Rock Spring Park. An abandoned duffle bag outside a Mt. Olive Dunkin’ Donuts sparked some fear for folks in the area who reported the suspicious bag to police. Bus maintenance facility nears completion, road naming to be unveiled.
The week was marred by tragedy as two bombs detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing two people and injuring scores more. The nation was riveted and repulsed by the actions and the week’s news centered around the tragedy both regionally and locally. Township, fire department discuss future of firefighting services in town.
The weather went from winter to summer with a quickness this past week, and just as warm as the temperatures was the news. It was an intense week, so let’s see what went on. A Tuesday night brush fire lit up the woods behind the pavilion at Schooley’s Mountain Park, resulting in damaged acreage and the use of all three of Washington Township’s fire companies. The blaze was knocked down in about an hour before any structures could sustain damage. Brush fire season was in full effect earlier this week, as the Washington Township Fire Department responded to four calls last Saturday and Sunday. The first week of April seemed to be warmer than all of March! We’re loving the higher temperatures and lack of snow and moving headstrong into spring.
