73-Yard TD Pass Ignites West Morris to State Title

Wolfpack capture first state championship in four years and seventh overall.

West Morris Central quarterback John Gutowski doesn’t need to throw passes very often, but on Saturday the Wolfpack found an opportunity to fling one they couldn’t pass up. Gutowski’s 73-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Amandos was a catalyst for West Morris’ 35-7 rout of Warren Hills in the North II, Group IV state championship game at High Point Solution Stadium on the campus of Rutgers University. Senior back Austin Roland rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns and his teammate Adam Caruso rushed for 109 yards and another score for West Morris, which captured its seventh state title in school history and its first in four years. “It’s the greatest feeling,’’ Roland said. “I’ve always dreamed of an opportunity to play in a state …

Nice job by both the players and coaches. Brought back memories of the 2001 championship which was Coach Henny's first as a headcoach. It's a great feeling for all involved. Kevin Lynch Maui Hawaii   more ›

Wolfpack Hunt For Elusive State Title

West Morris Central football returns to first championship game since 2009.

On a hot, late summer afternoon in September, Kevin Hennelly sat in the West Morris Central Wolfpack football team’s locker room and hesitated before answering a question. The query posed to the head coach, entering his 16th season as the program’s leader, was seeking to find who would fill the enormous void left in the offensive backfield; a portion of the team that would be instrumental in any kind of hunt for a championship. Three months later the Wolfpack is set to finish its hunt, as it prepares for a North II, Group IV state sectional title game against the Warren Hills Regional High School Blue Streaks Saturday, Dec. 8 at Rutgers University at 10 a.m. It was a long road, however, for the team to get to this position. The Wolfpack …

Backfield, Experience Key to Wolfpack Success

High school football team opens season at Morris Knolls on Saturday.

It's a formula for winning as old as the game itself. Anyone familiar with West Morris Central Wolfpack football knows the team’s success depends on how well the offense can run the football. And in 2012, the formula hasn’t changed, but it’s got a handful of new components. As the Wolfpack heads into the new campaign, the backfield will see a four running back rotation, according to Head Coach Kevin Hennelly. Those four include junior Kevin Hennelly (coach’s son), sophomore Kevin Sears, senior Austin Roland, and senior Adam Caruso. Junior Matt Carfaro will be the team’s fullback. Not one of those players was a starter in 2011, when senior tailbacks Jon Ciccone and Jason Mackewicz led the Wolfpack to the sectional semifinals before falling …

West Morris Battles Mendham to Tie

Wolfpack set to face Chatham this week.

The West Morris Central and Mendham High School ice hockey teams battled to a 1-1 tie in a Halvorsen Division matchup last Wednesday night at Mennen Arena. The Wolfpack’s Adam Richards scored the opening salvo off a nifty one-two pass from Tanner and Ryan Muscatella early in the first period. Mendham, which is sitting near the top of the division, challenged the young Wolfpack squad numerous times and finally hit pay dirt with two minutes remaining in the opening period. Thanks to penalties, both teams had opportunities to score in the second and third periods, but neither could capitalize. Wolfpack netminder Jamie de Iturrondo turned away 30 shots for West Morris. The Wolfpack next face Chatham (ranked No. 10 public school in the state by…
