I learned about floods out here that first winter on Beacon Hill (1993). Here’s what needs to be done:

On a township level, there should be in place:
A phone number to frequently updated prerecorded emergency status reports

An arrangement with 101.5FM and/or other radio stations to provide local emergency status reports

A non-emergency police number that works (instead of delivering a busy signal or directing the caller to voice-mail)

A dispatching systems that works – I’ve heard 2 complaints about the county system during Irene and Lee re: late response, inability to cancel a request for help, and other problems

Find FEMA or HS grant money to help pay for these things and pay for water remediation initiatives.

On a property-owner level:
Invest in a backup generator or at least, a battery backup for your sump pumps

Call in a basement water remediation expert. Get your drainage issues resolved

Get a backup pump and drainage hose(s) to handle freestanding water

Keep your rain gutters clean

Even generators fail, so:
Keep a flashlight in every room of your house

Get a battery-powered or crank powered radio

Keep several gallons of freshwater available

Keep bucket of water in every bathroom

Keep a supply of canned food in the pantry

Invest in a stovetop coffee percolator and backup hear source (you’ll need it)
