Week in Review: Elections Moved, Overturned

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you wake up on Monday, and before you know it, it’s the weekend? Well, that’s what it felt like here at Long Valley Patch. But that only means the news was plentiful, and to get a full sense of what happened, go here.

The week began on a high note, at least for fans of the New York Giants, . The team was treated to a parade and rally on Tuesday in New York and New Jersey, and some of Patch’s fans were there to take photos. .

Speaking of athletes achieving greatness, Long Valley Patch had the opportunity to sit down with Kat Spilman, a freshman at West Morris Central High School who competes in the United States Ski Association each weekend in Vermont. Spilman, just 14-years-old, has made a major commitment to her sport.

The Washington Township Schools Board of Education held its regular meeting this week, and faced a major decision on whether or not to move its election from April to November. The board decided, but was far from unanimous.

At that same meeting, the board formally introduced its Ad Hoc Committee that will spend the next six months figuring out ways to address the . The committee has asked residents to become heavily involved in the process. .

In another turn of events for the ongoing saga of last year’s Morris County Freeholder primary election, the appellate court ruled Margaret Nordstrom, who beat Truscha Quatrone for a seat on the governing body in November, be removed from her post. The court ruled that Superior Court Judge Thomas L. Weisenbeck did not have the authority to throw out the primary’s results, leading to an election by the Morris County Republican Committee.

As the week rolled along, Long Valley Patch learned sad news about one of its own. The body of Stephen Berstler Jr., 22, who went missing on Dec. 30, 2011, is believed to have been found in the Hudson River. Medical examiners are still conducting their investigation to confirm, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. .
