Man ID'd in Fatal Hackettstown Hit-and-Run

Police seek old, green dump truck witnesses say was involved in the incident.

Hackettstown Police identified Christopher Simmons as the on Mountain Avenue in Hackettstown Wednesday morning. 

Simmons, 22, of East Orange, was pronounced dead at the scene, Det. Darren Tynan said.

While the investigation is ongoing, police said Simmons’ fatal injuries were sustained when he was hit by a green dump truck traveling southbound on Mountain Avenue. Witnesses described the dump truck as being old, beat up and very rusty, Tynan said.

A search for the driver and vehicle is ongoing, Tynan said.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday morning. The roadway between Little Street and Route 46 was closed for about four hours before being reopened to the motorists.

Agencies assisting at the scene include the Hackettstown Detective Bureau, Warren County Prosecutor’s Office, Warren County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, New Jersey State Police, New Jersey Department of Transportation, St. Clare’s Hospital Medic Unit, Mansfield Township Police Department, Independence Township Police, Washington Township (Morris County) Police Department, Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Hackettstown Department of Public Works.
