Trial Set for Teacher Accused of Sexually Assaulting West Morris Central Student

Alleged crime happened in 2007; teacher was working for Bloomfield Board of Education.

While seven years have passed since the alleged sex assault on a then-15-year-old girl, a former music teacher is scheduled to stand trial this May.

According to nj.com, David Scheck was indicted in 2009 on charges he sexually assaulted a West Morris Central High School student in 2007, losing his job as a band director and music teacher in 2008 as an employee in the Bloomfield Board of Education.

Scheck was officially charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, criminal sexual contact, child endangerment and witness tampering.

Scheck is accused of making contact with the student online through social media site MySpace, which led to the exchange of cell phone text messages and online messages, the report said.

The teen claimed in court documents she and Scheck had not been physical, but told police the teacher had touched her sexually in her home and in a band practice room, the report said.

According to nj.com, the reason for the delay between indictment and trial date was due to "multiple factors," including additional evidence from the state.

The trial is slated to begin May 19 with Judge Mary Gibbons Whipple presiding.
