Two Newcomers Vie for Township Committee Seat in June Primary

Incumbent won't run for re-election in 2014.

An official changing of the guard is set for Washington Township in 2014, now that the deadline for those interested in running for a seat on the town’s governing body has come and gone.

Tracy Tobin, the lone committeeman whose seat was up for grabs in this year’s vote, stood by his word earlier this year to not make a re-election bid. Tobin, a Republican who was elected over Democrat Joseph Keyes in 2011, has served on the governing body for a total of nearly 30 years.

Two township men have filed to run in the June Primary Election, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.

Ronald Edwards and Matt Murello will vie for a spot on the November General Election ballot. The winner of that Election will begin a three-year term on Jan. 1, 2015. Both men live atop Schooley’s Mountain.

One new committeeman, Donald Babb, began his three-year term in 2014 after running unopposed in the 2013 Primary and General Elections. He replaced David Kennedy on the committee. The committee voted to have Ken Short and Bill Roehrich serve as mayor and vice mayor, respectively, at its January reorganization meeting.
